Can a piece of technology help you sleep and wake up more rested? For most of us, the idea is counter-intuitive. After all, it is our phones, tablets, and TVs that often take the blame for keeping us awake. The HF3520/60 Wake-up Light from Philips aims to combat that vicious cycle with a state of the art alarm clock that helps you fall asleep, and eases you into wakefulness in the morning.
The light works like similar ”sunrise” clocks that have come before it by simulating the gradual increase in ambient light of a natural sunlight. But it also includes a few extra design cues and features that make it stand out from the rest.
The entire face of the large circular device is a light which has 20 settings of brightness, with setting buttons positioned around the edge and the time itself displayed dimly on the bottom portion of the face. The user easily sets a predetermined ”dawn” and their preferred amount of time for the clock to go from total darkness to full brightness (the default is 20 minutes).
At the specified time, the clock begins to emit a low red glow, and gradually moves through phases of orange, yellow and finally full bright white light. Once full day light is reached, the clock can play the radio or a selection of natural sounds to signal that it is time to get up. When positioned on a nightstand, the slow increase in light is designed to send a signal to the brain and the body that it is almost time to wake, allowing a more relaxing start to the day when compared to the sudden jolt of an alarm clock buzzer!
Additionally, the clock features a ”Wind Down” mode designed to prepare you for sleep, where the light in the bedroom gradually decreases over a period of 15-30 minutes. It can also be manually set to any of its brightness levels to function as a bedside lamp or night light.
While not the first such sunrise simulating alarm clock, the Philips Wake-up Light may be the best designed and most effective yet. In my own experience, I have used this product for over a month and find it to be an indispensable part of my daily routine, allowing me to wake more easily and feel more rested each day.
