Create your own virtual reality experience using Google Cardboard and your smartphone.
Virtual reality devices have advanced in recent years giving users a truly immersive experience. It has taken gaming and content viewing to a whole new level! While most virtual reality devices can be pretty expensive, Google has created a product that creates stunning virtual reality experiences at an affordable price.
Google Cardboard creates a virtual reality experience using a cardboard diagram and your smartphone. It works by folding your smartphone inside the cardboard diagram and viewing images and content using smartphone apps designed to work with Google Cardboard.
There are two ways to create a Google Cardboard device:
1) Build the device yourself – you will need the following materials, which can be found at your local hardware store:
- A Corrugated Cardboard Sheet
- Rubber Band
- NFC tag (optional); this allows Cardboard apps to automatically launch on your phone.

2) Purchase a Google Cardboard device – you can also choose to purchase Google Cardboard from select manufacturers. Purchasing a kit allows you to choose from a variety of different models such as the new limited edition Star Wars edition.
All kits come with a “Works with Google Cardboard” certification that allows them to work with the Cardboard apps.
After assembling your Google Cardboard, you can access content via the Cardboard apps on your smartphone. There is a variety of free and purchasable apps; from virtual experiences such as Google Earth, Photo Sphere, and Tour Guide to games such as Star Wars and Cosmic Rollercoaster.

The price for Google Cardboard varies. If you decide it make it yourself, cost can vary depending on the price of the materials. The typical price range when purchasing from manufacturers is between $20-$35 CDN. While an unorthodox gift this Christmas, it is clearly a popular one and catching on quickly.
