This device gives “personal transportation” a whole new meaning.
Oxford English Dictionary defines the hoverboard as “a board, resembling a skateboard without wheels, which hovers above the ground and may be ridden like a skateboard”. While first introduced in Parts II and III of the Back to the Future films, advancements in technology have allowed them to enter the real world.
Today’s hoverboards do not hover off the ground per se, but are battery-powered, motorized, self-balancing, two wheeled scooters. They are one of the most popular gifts this holiday season and also one of the hardest to purchase.
This is due to the gray area in which hoverboards currently reside in terms of the law. On the one hand, city officials have tried to ban hoverboards from public sidewalks by deeming them motorized vehicles. Some, including celebrities like Wiz Kahlifa, have been arrested for using them on public roads. On the other hand, there is no law that says a person cannot own a hoverboard and rules against using them in public spaces have not been strictly enforced by police or city officials.
While the legality of hoverboards is currently in question, people’s desire to own one is not. So where can you buy a hoverboard for Christmas and what does it cost?
The cost of a hoverboard varies; the range seems to be between $300-$600 CDN, although some hoverboards can go for as much as $1000 CDN. It all depends on the make, model, and where you decide to purchase one.
The main place to purchase a hoverboard is online. Companies such as eBay, BestBuy, Amazon, and Kijiji are selling hoverboards to consumers online only. Major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and RadioShack have opted not to sell hoverboards this Christmas due to patent issues currently pending and the product’s legality. Nevertheless, major retailers are hoping to have hoverboards available in stores in 2016.
Despite the difficulty consumers might face shopping for hoverboards during the Christmas season, it is still a highly sought-after product. So channel your inner Marty McFly and pick up a hoverboard this holiday season!
