Is your email protected from a cyber-attack?
Email is one of the most common entry points for hackers to target your firm’s systems. Under the disguise of a legitimate email, hackers send links and attachments that, when opened, release viruses and malware onto your system.
Another tactic could involve hackers impersonating emails from a business owner or manager asking an employee to transfer money and information to them.
In both instances, the end result could involve encryption of your systems and files leaving you unable to access your data or a virus infection capable of putting your systems, and effectively your business, out of commission for an extended period of time.
With a large majority of attacks, including ransomware, stemming from email, business owners need to put the necessary products in place to protect their email systems.
The most common tactic is to install an email spam management system in your environment.
One of the best products on the market for email spam management is Mimecast. Sitting within your email system, Mimecast actively works to identify, quarantine, and remove any suspicious emails before they enter your inbox and potentially infect your systems.
Daily digests or quarantine reports are generated by Mimecast and sent as an email in Outlook. This lets the user know which emails have been deemed suspicious and are currently on hold in Mimecast’s server.
The user then has the option to either block, release, or permit the email to enter their inbox.
This essentially gives the user control over their mailbox where they can actively suppress any emails that they do not recognize, permit the emails they do recognize, and reduce the risk of accidentally opening an email from an unknown 3rd party.
In addition to spam management, Mimecast also provides a variety of other features:
- Large File Sending – Mimecast is able to send large email files in Outlook without the risk of bounce backs from the email system.
- Real Time Continuity – should your email server ever go down, Mimecast will continue to work and allows users access to send and receive emails. After service to the email server has been restored, Mimecast will sync all of the emails and work done during the outage ensuring seamless continuity in the workflow.
- Archiving – Mimecast has a 99 year retention period for archiving emails which allows them to be searched and retrieved easily within Outlook.
Take the necessary steps to protect your email. With the sophistication of ransomware and other cyber security threats affecting the technology landscape, email is one of the most common targets. Taking the steps to ensure viruses and malware do not find their way into your email and system will provide that extra layer of protection for your firm.
