Charles Bennett

Physical and virtual environments can be backed up with equal ease using Becon™ Backup.

Becon™ Backup is a set of technologies that delivers to a firm the effectiveness of having its own disaster recovery site for a fraction of the cost of building and maintaining such a site.   Traditionally, firms have not embarked upon a business continuity plan because of the complexity, cost, specialized IT resources and other factors which make developing a plan much harder.   Triella recognized this challenge and has worked for over a year to develop the Becon™ Backup solution. Deleted Messages with BES 10 and Exchange 2003
April 26, 2013
Charles Bennett

Deleting a message on the handheld removes the message from Exchange.

If you have Exchange 2003, here is another reason to upgrade.   A client reported the following problem:

We have just come across an issue where any emails that are deleted on a Z10 device are permanently deleted – they do not go into the users Deleted Items folder and are not in the Recoverable folder either. I have found other users on the forum sites that are having the same problem. Have you heard of this? I have looked for any settings regarding this but have been unable to find any to stop this from happening. Do you think it is a BES 10 issue, or an ActiveSync issue?

BlackBerry’s response to this issue is: Read more…

CISPA – New Security Bill Tabled in the US. Find out more.
April 25, 2013
Charles Bennett

SOPA and PIPA were defeated by privacy advocates. Will CISPA share the same fate?

Is your corporate data stored in the US? If so, it will be subject to a new proposed bill called CISPA in addition to the Patriot Act and the president’s kill switch on Internet within the US. While the risk is small, it may be a matter of when and not if, the US experiences an Internet based attack. The warning signs are present. Consider using 100% Canadian or foreign services such as those in the UK instead.

April 22, 2013
Charles Bennett

BlackBerry Balance segregates your work like and home life into two distinct categories.

The new BlackBerry Z10 takes advantage of a new feature called BlackBerry Balance.  BlackBerry Balance allows the BlackBerry Z10 to have two personalities – a personal section that allows you the freedom to do whatever you want with the device and a corporate section which is controlled by the BES Server and applies all corporate policies in effect.   In fact, the system can even prevent corporate data from being copied and pasted to the personal workspace.  Balance take BlackBerry’s strong emphasis on security even further.

Setting Notifications on the iPhone
April 9, 2013
Charles Bennett

Get notifications while the phone is locked.

On the Blackberry, you used to know when a new email was in your mailbox because a mail icon was displayed. You can do something similar on the iPhone/iPad by changing your Notifications. With the iPhone Notifications setup, you can get a preview of your messages when they arrive without unlocking your phone.

Follow the instructions below if you would like to setup your iPhone so that you can see if you have received a new email, text, or phone call (for that matter) when the phone is locked.

Step 1: Select Settings from the Home Screen

Here are some of the great new features in Office 2013

1) Touch Mode – If using Office 2013 on a tablet, or a computer with a touch screen, you can set Office to Touch Mode, spreading the menu features farther apart, making it easier to use via a touch screen.

2) Editing PDF Documents – Word 2013 now allows for editing non-protected PDF documents right into Word – without the need for an additional software license.

BlackBerry Z10 – Time Shift Camera Mode
March 28, 2013
Charles Bennett

Time Shift allows for the selection of the best picture in a series.

The BlackBerry Z10 sports a camera which in many ways is the same as cameras on other devices.  There is a camera in the front of the device and one in the rear.  However, in addition to the usual still-frame and video modes, the Z10 also has a time shift mode, designed to ensure you get the best portrait shot that you can in a given situation.

Once enabled, you tap the screen on the object (face) that you wish to focus on.  The Z10 then takes a series of photos in rapid succession and presents a timeline that can be dragged left or right to get to the best shot of the bunch. Once you are happy with the shot you can saved it by pressing the checkmark.  Photos can be immediately shared on BBM, Text Messages, Email, Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare or via NFC or Bluetooth communications. Time shift mode can be used on one or multiple faces in a shot. Read more…

Managing Outlook Mailbox Size
March 26, 2013
Mario Svalina

Many times we at Triella receive support issues regarding PC performance and are asked how Outlook mailbox sizes can affect PC performance, and how to help minimize the pain.

The quick answer: both the item count, and the size of the mailbox matter.  Having a large number of items inside a folder or inside your Inbox will take longer for Outlook and your computer to process.  Tasks such as sorting and searching emails take that much longer, and are much more taxing on your computer, if your mailbox size is large and contains thousands of items. Beware of “Package Delivery” Email Scams
March 25, 2013
Sean Kirby

Malicious emails frequently pose as messages from Couriers or Post Offices.

One of the most rapidly proliferating avenues for spam, viruses and other malicious software to infect computers is a particular type of email scam or “phishing” attempt that poses as a notification from UPS, FedEx, DHP, Canada Post and other delivery services.

Because most email viruses rely on getting the recipient to open an attachment in order to execute the malicious software, hackers have come up with more and more clever ways of crafting their messages so they appear to be legitimate – even urgent – business related correspondence. Here is how you can avoid becoming the victim of such fraud attempts: Read more…
